Glossary of Audio, Video and Home Theater Terms
There is a very large vocabulary of technical and descriptive terms that go with home theater. We've included the terms that you are most likely to encounter. If you are very technically involved you may find some of the more technical terms omitted from our list.
Gain - The Measurement of the reflectivity of a surface, such as a projection screen. The higher the number the greater the amount of reflected light and thus the brighter the image.
Gamma - When an image is filmed and then replayed, there is a difference from the original. Some parts of the image are more different than others. The relationship between any point of the display and the original can be displayed on a graph. This relationship is the gamma.
Gamma Correction - To restore a displayed image to the appearance of the original, gamma correction must be applied.
Geometric Distortion - The bending of straight lines and distortions, especially at the corners of the screen.
Grayscale - The range of gray gradations from pure white to pure black.
