Before checking the door hinges, unplug the
dishwasher or shut off the power at the fuse
box or breaker
panel to avoid an electrical shock hazard.
The door hinges can cause the door
to become misaligned making it difficult to close the door. A
misaligned door can also prevent the dishwasher from starting
and can result in leakage.
If the door has been dropped open,
especially if the door springs or cables are damaged, or if too
much weight was placed on the open door (such as using it as a
step) the hinges may have been loosened or bent. In most cases
bent hinges will need to be replaced.
Open and close the door, the movement
should be smooth with no sticking at all. With the door open a
few inches, try to rock the door left and right, it should not
move. Compare the alignment of the closed door with the frame
of the dishwasher, it should align along all edges. Close the
door and look closely were the latch connects with the dishwasher,
they should align without snagging.
To inspect the hinge mechanisms,
it may be necessary to first remove the door panel.
