Flower Garden Watering Basics

Continued from page 1

Ideally, a drip irrigation system, soaker hose, bubbler or micro sprinklers are the best method for delivering water to the flowers. Each of these irrigation methods can deliver water gently, over an extended time to the ground surrounding the plants. Plus, it can be programmed with a timer control to water at the optimal time of day, which may be before you are even awake.

Avoid over-watering; more people over-water than under-water. You may be one of the people who feel that if a little water is good, then a lot of water is even better. That is not true. The objective is to provide enough water so that the plant does not thirst. Too much water can carry away nutrients, foster fungal spores and disease and stress the plant.

Most plants are properly watered if when you place a finger on the surrounding soil, it feels slightly cool and just barely moist. It should not feel muddy, soggy or noticeably wet. For plants that prefer drier soil, the soil surface should feel completely dry. Stick your finger into the soil and there you should feel a bit of moisture.

If you have a variety of plants in a bed together, with a wide range of water needs, then the best solution for watering may be to install a drip irrigation system. A drip system uses emitters that carefully control the amount of water flow. You can mix different flow rate emitters in one bed to provide just the right amount of water to each plant according to its needs. You simply turn on the irrigation system for a set period of time and the high demand plants get more water and the low demand plants get less.
