Another Way to Improve Comfort and Save Money

Even if you have proper weatherstripping around windows and doors, there are many ways for drafts to steal energy from your home. Cold weather can make this a little easier to do, especially if it is a breezy or windy day.

The electrical outlets and switches around your home require an opening in the wall. those openings can let in drafts. We'll explain how to locate problem spots and the easy fix to seal out drafts and save on energy costs.

Reduce Heat Loss Through a Fireplace

When your fireplace is in use, the flue must be open to prevent smoke and dangerous carbon monoxide from entering your home. However, when the fireplace is not being used, warm air is lost through the chimney, wasting energy and reducing comfort levels.

Simply closing the flue, by reaching into the fireplace and moving the flue to close the chimney opening will reduce heat loss.

To reduce the risk of forgetting to open the flue for the next fire, attach a reminder signal. For example suspend a pine cone from the flue by a wire coat hanger.
